Towards a Framework for Truly Natural Low-level Sketch Recognition

چکیده
Although stroke-based systems may be considered the stateof-the-art in low-level sketch recognition, they still contain constraints and intricacies that may be invisible to most novice users. In this paper, we identify some common assumptions and problems of stroke-based systems and propose a plan for the development of a new low-level framework to deal with these issues. The broader impact of this framework will be the development of sketch recognition systems which place fewer (and hopefully no) drawing constraints on users and will allow for more natural sketching, starting at the lowest and most fundamental level.

A System for Recognizing and Beautifying Low-level Sketch Shapes Using NDDE and DCR
Sketching has been identified as a natural means for human interaction and thus has become commonly incorporated into various user interfaces. Current low-level sketch recognizers have produced good accuracy but recognize only a small set of basic shapes. We propose a low-level sketch recognition and beautification system that uses a hierarchical approach that is capable of recognizing eight pr...
متن کاملLearning from Neighboring Strokes: Combining Appearance and Context for Multi-Domain Sketch Recognition
We propose a new sketch recognition framework that combines a rich representation of low level visual appearance with a graphical model for capturing high level relationships between symbols. This joint model of appearance and context allows our framework to be less sensitive to noise and drawing variations, improving accuracy and robustness. The result is a recognizer that is better able to ha...
متن کاملFree-hand sketch recognition by multi-kernel feature learning
Free-hand sketch recognition has become increasingly popular due to the recent expansion of portable touchscreen devices. However, the problem is non-trivial due to the complexity of internal structures that leads to intra-class variations, coupled with the sparsity in visual cues that results in inter-class ambiguities. In order to address the structural complexity, a novel structured represen...
متن کاملSketch interpretation using multiscale stochastic models of temporal patterns
Sketching is a natural mode of interaction used in a variety of settings. For example, people sketch during early design and brainstorming sessions to guide the thought process; when we communicate certain ideas, we use sketching as an additional modality to convey ideas that can not be put in words. The emergence of hardware such as PDAs and Tablet PCs has enabled capturing freehand sketches, ...
متن کاملA Framework for Multi-Domain Sketch Recognition
People use sketches to express and record their ideas in many domains, including mechanical engineering, software design, and information architecture. Unfortunately, most computer programs cannot interpret free-hand sketches; designers transfer their sketches into computer design tools through menu-based interfaces. The few existing sketch recognition systems either tightly constrain the user’...
